Self Catering in idyllic natural surroundings of the Scottish Highlands

The Local Area

The Mains of Sluie makes a great base from which to explore in the beautiful Moray Firth region. The surrounding area has something to suit almost everyone's taste - ancient stone circles, hill forts and settlements, museums,  castles, local malt whisky distilleries of The Benromach and the Dallas Dhu, miles of white sandy beaches, Moray Firth dolphins, quaint coastal villages, river side & forest walks, great golf courses, skiing, cycling, fly fishing, boat trips, canoeing, white water rafting, horse riding, tennis, walking and some of the most scenic countryside and views in Scotland. Loch Ness with its legedary monster is only one hours drive away.

Five miles north along the A940 from the Mains of Sluie is Forres, one of Scotland's oldest small towns, and also one of its most attractive. It is situated on the A96 about 30 miles east of the Highland capital of Inverness and 70 miles west of Aberdeen. The town's impressive parks and gardens have gained the prestigious Britain and Scotland in Bloom award. It has a selection of good quality High Street shops, three banks and a Tescos. All designated car parks in Forres are free. The area has an appetising selection of restaurants.  A few miles north of Forres is the delightful village of Findhorn and adjacent is the home of Findhorn Foundation.

The history of this area is colourful, brutal and romantic in which the English and Scottish monachy and clans feature prominently.  The Mains of Sluie is on the estate lands of the  Earl of Moray; adjacent is the Logie Estate with its stylish visitors centre and Altyre Estates the seat of the Cumming Clan.  A few miles west of Sluie are the renowned castles of Brodie and  Cawdor. Seven miles to the east is the 13th centuary Abby of  Pluscarden and still inhabited by Benedictine monks. In this region of North East family histories are intertwined and the North East Scotland Family History Society and the Falconer Museum in Forres and the Elgin Museum are good starting points for local ancestral research.
